The Best Places To Sell Your Current Gaming System To Get Cash For The Upcoming Releases

By Sarah McConomy

The next-gen consoles from PlayStation and Xbox are just on the horizon. If you plan to sell your old console, here are some of the best places you can earn some extra cash.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are both due for release this holiday season. We don’t have an exact release date for the next-gen consoles, yet. However, now is the time to start shopping around for the best deal if you plan to sell your old console.

There are plenty of buyers available, it is just a matter of selecting the best value for money. To do that, you need to shop around. So, to help you out, we’ve pulled together a list of some of the best places to sell your old console.

Gamestop

One of the first places you are likely to have thought of is Gamestop. They offer competitive trade-in rates and you can choose between receiving cash for your console or taking store credit. If you go for store credit then you could possibly get a little more bang for your buck.

This isn’t always the case, though, so check the cash price vs. the store credit price before you sell your console. Also, be mindful that this is a physical store, so you will be expected to follow store rules during the current pandemic. If there is a queuing system or you are expected to wear a mask, then make sure you cooperate.

Facebook Marketplace

A great way to sell consoles locally (and further afield, of course), is Facebook Marketplace. You can access it via Facebook on any platform, so mobile and desktop Facebook both have this feature. For convenience, Facebook Marketplace is a great option.

It works like a classified section in a magazine or newspaper. You place an ad and then people can simply make you an offer. If their offer is in line with what you were expecting, you snap it up and they come and collect their console. Easy! The advantage here is you can take payment in cash, without fees attached to the sale.

Amazon Trade-In

Did you know you could sell your old console via Amazon? Not many people know this, but they have a Trade-In section on their website. It is primarily geared toward Amazon’s own tech, but it also has a section to sell your console and it is a pretty simple process.

You just need to search for your particular console and accept the price Amazon offers you. Just make sure you’ve already shopped around before accepting any prices. Also, note that Amazon will offer you an Amazon gift card in exchange. You can always put that towards the new console or some games, though!

Online Console Trade-In Platforms

Online trade-in platforms and websites are places you can sell your old games consoles. They allow you to search for specific makes and models before giving you a price. All from the comfort of your own home! You essentially agree to sell your console for a fixed fee and, providing your console is in the condition you specify, you’ll get that value paid into your bank account.

The buyers you encounter when selling in this way are often called “buyback companies”. A quick Google search will return plenty of results, but it can be difficult to navigate between trustworthy sites. How do you know you’re getting the best value for money if prices can vary by hundreds of dollars between these companies?

You can compare and contrast prices all in one place if you use a site like sellcell.com. SellCell is officially the largest tech trade-in price comparison site in the US. They can give you prices from up to 40 trade-in buyers for smartphones, tablets, and—yes—game consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation.

Using SellCell.com is simple. Enter the make and model of your device and in seconds SellCell will retrieve a list of best prices for your console. Select the buyer you feel is offering the best value for money and you can have cash in your bank within a couple of days. The advantage here is that all of the buyers have been vetted and you can see their trust ratings in your search results.

So, you can have peace of mind that whoever you sell your console to is an established site with good trading history. With prices varying radically across the board, using a comparison site helps you find the best price and save lots of your precious time. Not only that but the whole process is fast and, importantly at a time where hygiene is paramount, pretty much contactless. You’ll only need to hand your parcel over to the carrier.

Craigslist

Another online “classifieds” marketplace and perhaps one of the most well-known aside from eBay. Craigslist assists with local selling. You place your ad, marking down your city, and your console will appear in the listings for your locale. Craigslist is free to list your console, so you don’t need to worry about being stung with hidden fees down the line.

The good thing about selling locally is that you can name your price. However, be aware that if your price is too high then your ad won’t generate any interest. Or cash! Make sure you list at a reasonable price to ensure you sell your old console before the next-gen consoles arrive.

Shpock

A popular way to sell your old console is via a mobile app. Shpock has a mobile app and an online space, so you can take your pick. However, the app is great as you can photograph your products in there and apply them straight to your ad; there is no need to upload them separately.

Just grab the app via the Google Play or Apple App store, depending on your platform. It is then a simple matter of creating your advert, applying your fee, and waiting for that cash to roll in. As with Craigslist, ensure your price is reasonable before you sell, or you may be waiting some time.

So, as you can see, there are plenty of options available. There are others we haven’t listed here, such as eBay, as they have fees attached for both selling and then receiving your payment. All of the sites listed above are pretty hassle-free.

If you do plan to sell your tech, though, ensure you are shopping around, comparing the market, and getting the best price for your old console. Nobody likes to feel as though they’re out of pocket. That is why using a price-comparison site is such a great idea if you are looking for a speedy process, quick payout, and the best price for your console. You have an independent comparison at your finger-tips, all with the click of a button or two!
