Today, Ultimate Vocabulary software makers eReflect announced the importance of a new vocabulary expansion technique known as word-part technique. A University of Wellington study first proposed and then confirmed that the tactic of using root words can be beneficial in discovering the meaning and form of unknown words by simply relying on the repertoire of known words already in the learner's vocabulary.
The main argument of this research is that the repertoire of the first 2,000 words a learner knows (based on standard language acquisition) generally proves to be more than enough in helping the learner figure out, understand, and potentially learn new words. For instance, if a learner knows the prefix anti- (which means against or opposite to), then the learner can guess the meaning of unknown words such as antidepressants, antisocial and anticlimactic. The same applies to other common prefixes and root words such as chron- (time) and gyn- (woman).
Marc Slater, director of the Vocabulary software company, commented, This study brings to the surface an important aspect of vocabulary acquisition, where pre-established vocabulary knowledge can enhance our efforts for vocabulary expansion. These findings suggest that our basis, what we already know, can actually help us to more easily learn those hard-to-learn words on advanced vocabulary lists. It might be a paradox, but it's a rather convenient one.
To establish just how efficient this word-part technique is for ESL learners, the researchers compared it with two other techniques, the self-strategy and the keyword approaches. In both cases the root part technique proved to be more successful for vocabulary expansion.
Slater also stated, Vocabulary software can actually prove to be quite handy in applying and taking advantage of this new technique. Many software systems, ours included, have dictionary-like databases which make it easier for the user to find a word part and all the words constructed through that word family.
Expanding vocabulary is now easy and efficient thanks to this new technique of using root words to identify and possibly define unknown words.
