http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12464/6961926?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Thu, 15 Jun 2017 23:21:56 +0000 Sensory Friendly Movie Showings Essex Cinemas is offering a new way to watch movies for people that have sensory processing issues. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12464/6961926?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WFFF going to the movies with young children can be difficult... especially if a child is sensitive to light and sound.bernielocal 22's rebecca reese visited one local theatre that's making movies more friendly for everyone. now showing: a new way to watch a movie on the big screen.cullen schill/essex cinemas general manager: "there's a lot of stimulation at a movie theater. so the sensory friendly allows us to leave the lights on... turn the sound down a little bit and just provide a much more comfortable experience." essex cinemas is offering a new kind of movie experience that could help children with autism or children with sensory processing issues sit through a film.rebecca reese/reporter: "it's the loud noises and the dark room that make it hard to enjoy the movie." david rettew is a child psychologist at the university of vermont medical center.david rettew/child psychologist: "all of the senses that you would feel get feeled at a much higher amplitude. so what people who don't struggle with these issues experience as loud... these kids experience as really loud and very uncomfortable. what some people just feel as uncomfortable with darkness-- does become kind of scary." rettew says not all kids with sensory issues are on the spectrum. they take in too much information at a place like a movie theater... which is a concern that customers brought up to the general manager, cullen schill.cullen schill/essex cinemas general manager: "we really just wanted to provide a place that was really just comfortable-- where somebody could just come and be themselves and we allow somebody talks or somebody who needs to get up and walk around or something like that. they can do that." and something that could even be accomdating for rettew.david rettew/child psychologist: "well as a dad of a five year old who sometimes struggles with really loud noises-- this could be the perfect kind of thing for him to help him enjoy a movie all the way through." a new way to sit back, relax and enjoy the show. rebecca reese, local 22 news. bernie the essex cinema is following in the footsteps of their sister-cinema in plattsburgh and will be showing a sensory friendly 'cars 3' this saturday morning at ten.
