Samsung Electronics Profit Seen Bottoming In Third Quarter Ahead Of Slow Recovery

Samsung Electronics' profit is seen weakening further in the third-quarter, underscoring the downturn in its market-leading smartphone business and piling pressure on the firm to deliver a revamped product lineup. Analysts forecast the world's largest smartphone maker, which is due to give its July-September earnings guidance on or around Oct 7, to show its worst operating profit in nearly three years, with a slow recovery seen starting in the fourth quarter. Analysts and investors say Samsung's days of massive smartphone-driven earnings are over, as Apple grabs the lion's share of profits at the high end of the market and Chinese makers of cheap and feature-rich smartphones, like Lenovo and Xiaomi, erode margins at the low end.

Apple could add gold to the menu for the next version of the 9.7-inch iPad Air, according to Bloomberg, and then introduce a 12.9-inch version of its tablet next year. This is in line with rumors TechCrunch heard from Bloomberg before, which pegged a large-screen iPad as being added to the lineup back in August. So far, it's been rumored mostly that Apple plans to make only minor changes to the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display this year.

Apple is expected to unveil a new iPad this month and it may come in a new color this time around. Bloomberg reported Wednesday that Apple plans to launch a gold version of its 9.7-inch iPad and the gold version, which would come with a white face, will flank the silver and gray models already available. While major design changes are not expected, the new iPads is rumored to feature Apple's new A8 processor and updated specs.
